David Stern

Sports Speaker David Stern was the 4^th Commissioner of the NBA and served in that role for 30 years (1984-2014). Stern got his start with the NBA in 1978 as a General Counsel and had worked his way up to Executive Vice President before succeeding Larry O’Brien as Commissioner of the league in 1984.

Stern was the Commissioner through four different lockouts, numerous scandals and massive NBA expansion. David Stern is credited with increasing the popularity of the NBA and for his work as Commissioner he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.

During his tenure, David Stern was apart of the relocation of six teams, the addition of seven new teams and the highly debated ratification of the dress code. He endured many controversies including alleged tampering with the NBA Draft Lottery and his decision to change the NBA official game ball.

Overall, Stern has been a highly influential man in the game of basketball over the past three decades and has played a major role in shaping the NBA into the league it is today.
