Alyssa Nakken

Former softball star at Sacramento State, Alyssa Nakken, was recently named the San Francisco Giants full time assistant. Nakken is the first woman MLB coach in history.

In her time at Sacramento State, Nakken was a three time all confrence first baseman. The female coach joined the Giants as an intern in baseball operations in 2014. She then moved up to overseeing the health and wellness initiatived for the Giants, and finally moved up to a full time assistant job.

As one of the first women in uniform, Alyssa has opened the gates for women in sports. She beat out hundreds of applicants with the Giants and has made her path go down in history. Nakken won the World Series ring with the team in 2015, but that was not her ultimate prize.

According to manager Gabe Kapler, via nbcsports.com, “In every organization, environment affects performance, and baseball clubhouses are no different. That’s why in addition to assisting the rest of the coaching staff on the field, Mark (Hallberg) and Alyssa will focus on fostering a clubhouse culture that promotes high performance through, among other attributes, a deep sense of collaboration and team.” The importance of Nakken with this team is increasing due to the building culture in the clubhouse, building a winning culture for the team, and becoming a keynote female sports speaker.

Former Sacramento State head coach Kathy Strahan, who coached Nakken all four years, states, “This is a historic moment for the San Fransisco Giants baseball organization, women in sports, and the Sacramento State softball program.”

As a psycology major, Alyssa Nakken graduated from Sacramento State in the Spring of 2012. She later added a master’s degree in sports management from the University of San Fransisco in 2015.

As a trail blazer, women’s empowerment advocate, female sports coach, Alyssa Nakken is making strides in the sports industry work force for women across the nation.
