Motivational Keynote Speaker Tony Hawk is one of the most exciting action sports heroes and iconic entrepreneurs of the 21st century. When it came time to pick a career path, it was an easy decision. Tony loved to skateboard and he found a way to parlay that passion into a multi-million-dollar skateboarding empire. Outside of his many accolades as an athlete and trailblazer of the sport, the overwhelmingly popular Tony Hawk brand and his skateboard company Birdhouse have served as a business model of success and industry longevity for future innovators and entrepreneurs.
In April of 2016, Tony was a featured keynote speaker at eMerge Americas 3rd annual conference in Miami. Tony spoke about authenticity in branding and how to allow your passion to create and drive your success.
Tony is a California kid who picked up a skateboard at age 9 and was winning local skate competitions by the age of 12. 2 years later he turned pro and began competing against the best skateboarders in the world. By 16, he had bested them all, and was widely considered the best competitive skateboarder in the sport. However, the sport began to lose popularity in the early 90’s and Tony found himself at a crossroads: give up the sport he loved and find another job, or find a way to make it work. Work he did and in 1992, Tony and his friend Per Welinder formed the Birdhouse Skateboards company. The entrepreneur was born!
When skateboarding experienced a resurgence in the U.S. in the late 90’s, Tony Hawk and Birdhouse were at the top of the heap. In 1999, he became the first person ever to complete a “900” (two and a half revolutions) on a skateboard. From winning contests to selling boards and gear, Motivational Keynote Speaker Tony Hawk filled a huge need in the action sports market as a role model and creator of a booming skateboard business. He would eventually expand his personal brand to include a clothing line for kids in Hawk Clothing.
Perhaps one of Tony’s most successful ventures outside of Birdhouse is his classic video game Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater from Activision. Since its creation, the game has surpassed 1.4 billion in sales. IN 2012, Tony launched his own YouTube channel, RIDE Channel, which has since become its own website curated with help from Complex Media. Tony’s autobiography, HAWK – Occupation: Skateboarder, is a New York Times bestseller.
