Long before the home and garden speaker Nate Berkus became Oprah Winfrey’s design guru, he was rearranging living spaces all over the world. Starting his career interning at and working for various auction houses gave Berkus insight into what works in a space. At just 24 years old, Nate Berkus founded Nate Berkus Associates. As time went on, Berkus’ firm became unparalleled in exclusivity and class- designing projects for Barneys New York, Wolfgang Puck’s Spago, W hotels, and more.
Nate’s lengthy credentials caught the attention of The Oprah Winfrey Show, and, in 2002, was invited to transform a space. This project served as an interview of sorts for Nate Berkus, as he went on to become Oprah Winfrey’s design expert. Throughout his eight year tenure on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Nate Berkus transformed 127 spaces into chic, liveable spaces.
As more fans grew eager to learn from the design wiz, the home and garden speaker wrote his debut book Home Rules: Transform the Place You Live into a Place You’ll Love in 2005, and landed his own radio gig on Oprah Radio in 2006. Nate Berkus later became the host of Oprah’s Big Give in 2008. Berkus’ 2005 line of home goods for Linens ‘n Things and 2008 line for HSN solidified his rank as a hands-on designer.
Since the end of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Berkus hosted an eponymous show The Nate Berkus Show on CBS until 2011. Most recently, Nate Berkus was an exective producer on the hit film “The Help” and appeared on two epsodes of Days of Our Lives. Nate hosted American Dream Builders during the shows only season. The NBC show featured top designers and architects going head-to-head in weekly renovation competitions.
Nate Berkus is openly gay and was featured alongside his partner, Jeremiah Brent, in Banana Republic ad’s in magazines such as InStyle and Rolling Stone, the first time a same-sex couple had been featured in ads for those magazines. The couple have a daughter, Poppy Brent-Berkus. Nate Berkus is available for speaking engagements, infomercials, and personal appearances.
