Young Star Athletes to Watch for 2020 Edition:
The 2010s offered some of the most captivating sports moments, electrifying athletes, and historic games over the course of the decade. While the accomplishments of some of these athletes will be hard to top, some athletes have already made quite the name for themselves, and are primed to take their respective leagues by storm, and dominate for years to come. 1. Luka Doncic
At just 20 years old, Luka Doncic has taken the NBA by storm. 2. Coco Gauff
Gauff shocked fans around the globe when she competed in the Wimbledon tournament, at just 15 years old. The young athlete dazzled on the tennis court, looking like a primed veteran, beating some of the best players in the world. Her and her dad were the biggest story of the summer, as fans loved the family dynamic taking over the sports media. Being ranked in the top 100 by the Women’s Tennis Association, reaching as No. 68 in the world, Gauff has already accomplished unimaginable feats, and will look to be entering her prime during the 2020s in which she will only be in her 20s.
3. Ja Morant
Ja Morant, the second pick in the 2019 NBA Draft had been overshadowed by monster prospect Zion Williamson coming out of college, but not anymore. With Williamson sidelined to start the NBA season, Morant was able to enjoy all the spotlight and has done nothing but impress. Leading a formerly hapless Memphis Grizzlies team, Morant has energized the city, with his prolific passes and his electrifying dunks. Already putting defender after defender on posters that have gone viral, Morant is ready to go head to head with Luka and Zion, as the most marketable and entertaining young NBA star this next decade.
4. Caeleb Dressel
Star swimmer Caeleb Dressel looks to take over the crown for Olympic Legend Michael Phelps as the best swimmer in the world. After having a wildly successful 2019 World Championships run with six gold and two silver medals, the star swimmer is ready to take on the world in the 2020 Olympics. If he is able to pull off a similar run this year, he will be able to cash in on some of the endorsements that made Michael Phelps such a visible Olympic icon both in and out of the pool for so many years.
5. Gerrit Cole
Gerrit Cole was one of the most dominant forces in the MLB last year, helping lead the Houston Astros to the World Series. Despite a loss to the Nationals, Cole’s stock skyrocketed and he was able to secure a historical deal with the New York Yankees. The Yankees signed Cole to the biggest pitcher contract in MLB history at nine-years and $324 million. Known for their seemingly infinite salary cap and fearless decision making, the Yankees are betting on their new ace to bring them to the World Series as well. As the face of one of the most established brands in the world, Cole will be one of the most interesting players on the field for the next decade.
6. D.K. Metcalf
D.K. Metcalf was a physical freak coming out of Ole Miss in the 2019 NFL Draft. His enormous biceps creating an image of absolute dominance, and he lived up to the hype this year. Playing in a dynamic offense with NFL Star Russell Wilson, Metcalf was one of the best rookies in the league. Known for his pacifier style mouthpiece, adding to his already popular social media image, Metcalf was electrifying on the field. Despite a loss in the playoffs to the Green Bay Packers in the second round, D.K. set a playoff record for most receiving yards by a rookie in their first playoff game with an insane 160 yards and a touchdown. As far as his mass marketability, one announcer mistakenly called him “Decalf” Metcalf, jumpstarting a coffee company to enlist Metcalf for a celebrity campaign that helped charities of both Metcalf and the announcers choosing. More deals will certainly come for the rookie, as he looks to cement himself as the best of the best in the years to come.
7. Joe Burrow
Joe Burrow, Heisman winner for LSU, has been the most dominant player in College Football this past year. Bring the Tigers to the National Championship game, Burrow has all but cemented his spot as the first overall pick in the NFL Draft. The Bengals hold the first overall pick, and if they do select Burrow, he will look to revitalize the franchise, and be their new face for the next decade. If he can continue the dominance he enjoyed in college, not only will he become one of the best players in the NFL, but he will be able to choose from a plethora of sponsorships from brands looking to cash in on the young star’s popularity.
8. Stefanos Tsitsipas
Some may have not heard of tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas. Well you will soon. The Greek star impressed fans around the world after appearing on his biggest stage at the US Open. He became the youngest player ranked in the top 10 by the Association of Tennis Professionals and even reached No. 5 in the world, making him the highest-ranked Greek player in tennis history.
9. Carissa Moore
Star surfer Carissa Moore made news recently when it was announced she would be part of the first U.S. Olympic women’s surfing team. One of the top surfers in the world, Moore has accumulated a bevy of awards and recognitions. Moore is a former Glamour magazine Women of the Year winner and was elected to the Surfers’ Hall of Fame in 2014. Just last year she won the WSL Women’s World Tour Championship. With the coming Olympics, Moore looks to solidify Surfing as an Olympic sport alongside fellow member and top surfer Carlone Marks.
10. Caroline Marks
Alongside Carissa Moore, Caroline Marks will also be joining the U.S. Olympic Surfing team, marking a historic year for the sport. 10 years Moore’s junior, Marks has already established herself as a top surfer in the world. At just 17 years old, she is a multiple time national champion and became the youngest female to compete in a World Surf League event. Additionally, she continued to defy the odds by being the youngest surfer ever to qualify for the women’s Championship Tour. Competent as part of the 2 woman team in the Olympics, Marks will look to conquer the world stage yet again at the Olympics this summer in Tokyo.
