After winning a local modeling competition at 16 years old, Charlize Theron went to New York with Pauline’s Model Management and decided to stay after her 1 year contract expired and attended the Joffrey Ballet School until 19 when a knee injury forced her to stop her career.
Her mother bought her a one way plane ticket to Los Angeles and after a screaming match with a bank teller, casting agents behind her in line gave her their card and asked her to call them. They introduced her to an acting school and casting agents. After many months in LA, she received her first role in Children of the Corn III and her first speaking role came in 2 Days in the Valley. Her career soon took off after her role in The Devil’s Advocate, Mighty Joe Young and The Cider House Rules. In 1999, Charlize was on the cover of Vanity Fair as the “White Hot Venus.”
She won Best Actress at the Academy Awards for Monster, a SAG Award and Golden Globe Award. Charlize was the first South African to win an Oscar for Best Actress. In 2005, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Best Actress Academy Award and a Golden Globe nomination for her lead role in North Country. In 2008, Charlize starred next to Will Smith in Hancock and Mad Max: Road Fury.
