Business Speaker David Geffen and Elliot Roberts founded Asylum Records in 1970, which signed artists including Jackson Browne, The Eagels, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Linda Ronstadt and J.D. Souther. Later, Asylum was acquired by Atlantic’s parent company, Warner Communications and merged with Elektra Records to become Elektra/Asylum Records. After he retired from Vice Chairman of Warner Brothers, he became a teacher at Yale University. He later returned to the entertainment industry.
In 1980 he founded Geffen Records and recruited Warner Bros. Records exec Ed Rosenblatt as president. His first artist to sign was Donna Summer. The label was distributed by Warner Bros. Records since its birth, but in 1990, it was sold to MCA and today is part of Interscope-Geffen-A&M division of MCA’s successor, Universal Music Group.
Through Geffen Film Company, David Geffen produced comedies like Little Shop of Horrors, Risky Business and Beetlejuice. In 1994, he co-founded the DreamWorks SKG studio with Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenger.
