Celebrity Speaker Eddie Murphy is an American actor and stand-up comedian who first gained nationwide fame through his performance on various Saturday Night Live skits. Murphy grew up in Roosevelt, New York with his mother, step-father and brother Charlie. For a time after his father’s death Murphy lived in foster care, this is where he said he developed his sense of humor. By the age of 15 he was developing stand-up routines which were heavily influenced by the likes of Bill Cosby and Richard Prior.
The actor got his first big break on Saturday Night Live where he appeared in skits as characters like Buckwheat and Black Gumby. In 1982 Murphy made his film debut in the movie 48hrs starring alongside Nick Nolte. The movie was one of the most popular of the year and gave Murphy new opportunities in Hollywood. In the upcoming years Murphy put out several stand-up specials and also starred in the action comedy classic, Beverly Hill Cop. Beverly Hills Cop elevated Murphy to a new level of fame and made him one of the most successful comedians of the decade. Murphy rounded out the 1980’s with films like “Coming to America” and “Trading Places.”
In the 1990’s some suspect movie role choices hindered Murphy’s career and dropped him from the list of Hollywood’s hottest comics. But by the latter half of the decade roles in films like The Nutty Professor, Shrek and Dr. Dolittle reignited his career and introduced him to a whole new audience. Throughout the new millennium he starred in many films and regained his position as one of Hollywood’s most lucrative comedians. As of 2014, Eddies film appearances have grossed over $3.8 billion in the United States and Canada, and over $6.6 billion worldwide.
Besides his work in film Murphy has also made a foray into music, releasing several albums during the 1980’s. He is also a big giver to charity donating to groups like the AIDS Foundation and Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation
