Earth, Wind & Fire is widely recognized as one of the most iconic bands to ever exist. The group was founded in 1969 by Maurice White and rose to popularity in the 1970s. The group has straddled multiple music genres; funk, rock, and pop to name a few. Their versatility has abled them to endure their popularity all the way through the 21st century, still touring to this day.
The group has had dozens and dozens of members over the years, however the most notable members were the late Maurice White (founder), his brother Verdine White, and Phillip Bailey. Verdine and Phillip remain involved with the band currently, involved in bass and vocals respectively.
PHILANTHROPY
Members of EW&F have become involved in philanthropic activities over the years. In 2007, celebrity philanthropist Philip Bailey founded the Music is Unity Foundation, which aims to provide the support necessary for youth to successfully transition to adulthood. The foundation works in a multitude of ways and receives a percentage of EW&F’s ticket sales which helps fund the organization’s efforts. Celebrity speaker Verdine has also has worked with Philip Bailey’s Music is Unity Foundation. Verdine also co-founded the Verdine White Performing Arts Center, which is a non-profit that helps underprivileged youth become involved in music through scholarships among other things.
PUBLIC APPEARANCES
Over the years EW&F have made numerous appearances both on screen and in public, in addition to traditional performance opportunities. In 2008 EW&F performed at a Columbia commencement, where Verdine White gave a commencement speech. The group has also appeared on shows such as Conan, Good Morning America, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and the Ellen DeGeneres Show among many others.
