Campbell is the daughter of former Louisiana Democratic State Senator and Secretary of State James H. Brown Jr. and attended college at Louisiana State University. She got her start in TV journalism as a reporter for local news stations in Topeka, Kansas, Richmond, Virginia, Baltimore, Maryland and eventually Washington, D.C.. Campbell was hired by NBC in 1996 and worked as a Pentagon and White House Correspondent. She was a chief correspondent for George W. In March of 2006, Campbell was announced as a potential replacement for Katie Couric on the Today Show. A year later she announced that she would be leaving NBC after 11 years to host her own news show Campbell Brown on CNN. Campbell left CNN in 2010 which allowed her to expand her career to new avenues including writing op-ed pieces for major publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Daily Beast.
Campbell has also kept busy as a leading voice in school choice and education reform. She is the founder of the Parents Transparency Project which operates as a watchdog for parents seeking information on issues impacting children in schools. She has also founded 2 non-profits, the Partnership for Educational Justice and The 74. The Partnership for Educational Justice helps students and parents advocate for public school reform while The 74 is an online new site circulating stories regarding education in America.
