South Beach Wine & Food Festival History
Widely recognized as America’s most prestigious gourmet gathering, the festival began as a one-day event at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus. From 1997-2001, the Florida Extravaganza showcased wins paired with food from local restaurants.
In 2002, the director of special events at Southern Wine and Spirits of America, Lee Brian Schrager, took over the one-day festival and brought it to South Beach. By renaming the event the South Beach Wine and Food Festival and giving the event an entire overhaul, Schrager’s renovated festival attracted close to 7,000 guests. The Food Network and Cooking Channel arranged celebrity chef appearances to attract a larger audience and gain media attention. Over the years, the event grew, bringing in over 65,000 guests in 2013 and counting ever since.
