Drew Carey is an American actor, comedian and game show host who first gained notoriety on a national scale through his work on the nationally televised Drew Carey Show. Carey was born in Parma, Ohio and attended Kent State where he was expelled two separate times for poor academic performance. After flunking out of school Carey joined the Marine Corps, serving six years and rising to the level of corporal.
Carey first gained experience in the Hollywood limelight when he took to the stage as a stand-up comedian in 1985. He performed at hundreds of comedy clubs over the next few years and received his first big break when he was asked to appear on the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. This appearance was followed by many others on networks like HBO, CBS and NBC. His success on stage was followed by some introductory roles in films like Coneheads and the Torkelsons.
In 1995 Carey premiered his first sitcom on ABC called the “Drew Carey Show.” It was tremendously successful and made the comic popular on a national level. The show ran for nine years and had a total of 233 episodes. In 1998 Carey began hosting the American version of the improvisational comedy show, “Who’s Line Is It Anyway?” The show ran for a total 6 years and gained a cult following among many fans.
After remaining on the low for several years Drew Carey made a huge come back as host of the Price is Right, taking over for legendary host Bob Barker. Carey had to fill some big shoes but he was able to quiet the naysayers and keep the shows broad fan base. In 2011, he began hosting a new improv show called “Drew Carey’s Improv-A-Ganza”, which featured many of the same performers seen on “Whose Line?” and “Drew Carey’s Green Screen Show.” Carey was on the 18th season of “Dancing with the Stars” in 2014.
The comedian is also a philanthropist who has given to such charities as the Ohio Library Foundation and Lance Armstrong’s LIVESTRONG foundation. Drew Carey is available for corporate events, product launch, and speaking engagements.
